10 years ago I was working a dead end job at a pizza place. A guy who I worked with asked me what I do. I said “I’m a skater”. It’s what I’ve been into since I was 12. Other than my wife, family, and friends, nothing else is as important. He asked me why don’t I start a skate company? I said that I had thought about it over the years, but never seriously. Then I thought to myself, why not? All anyone else who ever started a skate company did was have the motivation to do it. So I started brainstorming on a good name for a company.
After months of thinking, I stumbled upon Traditional Skateboards. It made sense. It meant something. It had mass appeal. So in 2008 I went and registered as The Traditional Skateboards Company, got my tax ID number, and made it official.
Over the past ten years there have been ups and downs, but it’s been something that I am stoked to do, and it’s ALWAYS interesting.
Skateboarding is forever. It is so much more than just a sport, or an art form, or just a form of transportation. It is LIFE.
So here’s to another ten years of Traditional Skateboards!
Thank you to everyone who has ever bought a deck or a shirt or some bolts or whatever. It means a lot to me, not because I’m getting “rich”, far from it. I put more of my own money into this thing than I get out of it, and I don’t care. I love skateboarding. It’s the best.
NONTEST 3 happened. If you missed it, we’ll have another in 2018.
Universal Coordinated Time.
I’m the owner of The Traditional Skateboards LLC. I’m old, but I still skate as much as possible and I have fun when I do. I’m at least twenty years past the point of caring about being “good”.
The first Traditional Tuesday is coming up next week! Tuesday night, June 14th, at 6:00 pm at 9th&9th skatepark. Come on down and skate, hang out, and eat some food! Arturo De La Paz will also be there selling some of his custom glass pieces!
Work has started on the Traditional bowl once again!
If you have materials to donate or if you want to come help dig, please contact me. I need rebar of all lengths and thickness, and bags of concrete. I’ve also started a GoFundMe account to accept cash donations. Here’s the link:
NONtest 2 was a good time yesterday!! Thank you to everyone who came out and skated, or just hung out. I’m sorry the BBQ didn’t happen, but with the wind and the dirt under the bridge, I didn’t want to serve up a bunch of dirtburgers.
I talked to many different people yesterday who think the NONtest should happen on a more regular basis. And I AGREE. So plans are in the works to have at least one more this year. And if that works out well, maybe we’ll have ANOTHER one this year.
Three weeks from today, NONTEST 2! Sunday, May 1st. Beginning around noon.
Where? Under the 600 North/I-15 bridge, on the East side. There’s some jersey barriers that already have some DIY concrete, a HUGE parking lot area of nice flat asphalt where there will be a random assortment of ramps, rails, manny pads and parking blocks, PLUS a perfect wall where ramps can be set up against to skate.
We’re bringing a bbq so there will be burgers or hot dogs, and there will also be some random free drinks and water. Plus random Traditional Skateboards product for sale and for free.
So bring yourself and some friends, and something to skate if you can. The more the merrier!!
NONtest TWO is in the works!! We’re planning on having it again in May. And this year, one of the potential spots to have it at is under the 600 North I-15 bridge. It’ll be on a Sunday, just to make sure the spot is empty. So bring yourself and some friends, and a ramp, or some junk to skate. We will bring some free drinks, and possibly have a BBQ.
More info as the date draws nearer. . .
Life happens. Sorry there hasn’t been any new content for the last month or so. . .

When we’re out skating, it’s not always easy. Sometimes you try, and try, and try a trick, over and over until you finally land it and it feels right. Or you might not land it at all. And when you’re out on the streets, all kinds of other things happen while you’re skating. You meet random people, friends, and security guards who are sometimes cool, and sometimes total assholes. We got to skate the downtown Salt Lake City library for about an hour after one pair of security guards told us we could skate as long as we weren’t ollieing the big six stair set, or grinding the manual pad. Then another security guard told us we couldn’t skate at all. So we left, headed to another spot, and got kicked out immediately by a cop who was obviously having a crap day. So we left spot number two, and headed to another spot. We skated there for about 30 minutes, then a REAL asshole security guard gave us the boot. We left that spot, and headed to the final spot for the day and got to skate there for almost an hour before we were all worked and decided to head home. Here’s a little footy from the library. . .
Did some street skating today with Josh and Fatty.
It almost hit 60 degrees here in Salt Lake today. I couldn’t resist skating the SSL Kurbs. . .

If you have ANY material to donate, contact me. We need bags of concrete, rebar, cinder blocks, bags of Portland Cement, and good old fashioned labor. . .
HUGE thanks to @__nothingscool for a big material donation yesterday!! He just earned a lifelong pass to skate! More thanks to Kai Vierstra and Fatty for helping move said material and with yard work as well!
If you’ve got any material such as cinder blocks, bags of concrete or Portland cement, rebar, 2×4’s, 2×6’s, or sheets of 3/4″ or thicker plywood or OSB, let me know!! I’m accepting any donations as this is a true DIY project. Anyone who helps will get to skate the bowl when it’s done.

Just got the first load of concrete delivered to the house! HUGE thanks to Dave Tyler @b109 for coming through like a true homie does! Also special thanks to Andrew Schetrompf for helping with the grunt work. The Traditional Bowl will begin seeing work done by this weekend. It’s a true DIY project that’s going to be built in sections, so it could take a while to be “complete”. But hopefully not.
New product in The Shop! Traditional Skateboard Hardware is now available!
Keep checking in on the shop as new things will be popping up in the near future.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the first NONtest yesterday!! The turnout was great, and when all was over, we left the school looking like nothing ever happened. Thanks to Brook Seely, Steve Fisher, and Dave Tyler with B109 for bringing fun stuff to skate! I’m working on a little edit right now of some of the skating.
NONtest TWO is being planned for a month or two from now.
To everyone who wants to go to the NONtest tomorrow, I wanted to clarify something…
When I first had the idea for the jam, it was going to be at a skatepark or an abandoned parking lot, so I mentioned bringing booze on the flyer. But since it’s happening in a neighborhood on a school parking lot, everyone involved asks you to please not bring any booze or other illegal items. Out of respect for the neighborhood, and any kids who might be there.
The NONtest/junk jam is THIS Sunday, May 31st! Starts at 1pm. If you don’t know where it’s at, contact me through Instagram or the Traditional Skateboards page, OR email me at email@example.com!
Looks like the rain will finally let up by this weekend! Perfect weather for the NONtest/junk jam! Shortbus Skateboards will also be there to add more FUN to the mix.
Site finally open today. THANK YOU to all who have bought a Traditional deck in the past, and to all who have helped me get here in any way!
Although it’s not much to look at now, keep checking back and watch as Traditional Skateboards does it’s thing.
Now GO SKATE.
